NOFMA’s Guideline: “Any combination of grain classifications including Plain-Sawn, Rift-Sawn & Quarter-Sawn.” (Plain-Sawn is defined as boards in whose cross section the angle of the annual ring tangent to the face of the piece to be between 0 and 30 degrees Rift-Sawn is 30 to 60 degrees and Quarter-Sawn is from 45 to 90 degrees).

NOFMA’s Guideline: “A flooring product with coloration variations produced by differences of natural heartwood and sapwood, along with the following characters described:
The face may contain: unlimited darkened sapwood, no bright sapwood allowed. Knots/Burls: Broken Knots up to 3/8” diameter, with no broken or loose pieces and must be fillable. Torn Grain: Must san out, (1/32” or less deep) a torn area of no more than 1” x 1” x 3’ permitted. Tongue: ½ tongue allowed. Checks: One check ½” long allowed every foot. Checks can be slightly open, 1/64” wide by 1/8” deep or less, and limited to 3 or less in a single group. Corner Breaks: A chipped area may extend ¼” x .05”. Edge Defects: One slight edge defect per 2’ allowed, less than the thickness of a dime and ½” long. The following defects are not allowed: Pith, Shake, Rot, rough face or split ends.
Character Grade:
A blend of 80% Number One Common and 20% Number Two Common NOFMA grades.

prominent variations in coloration and varying characters. Boards must be at least 25% heartwood. Sapwood may be stained, blotchy or speckled. The purpose of this grade is to furnish a floor suitable for homes, general utility use, or where character marks and contrasting appearance is desired. NOFMA’s Guideline for No. Two Common: “A flooring product which may contain sound natural variations of the forest product and manufacturing imperfections. The purpose of this grade is to furnish a floor suitable for homes, general utility use, or where character marks and contrasting appearance is desired. The following characters are not admitted:
Shattered or rotten ends, large broken knots, excessive bad millwork, shake, advanced rot, and similar unsound defects. Dark machine burns exceeding 3/64" deep not admitted. Knot holes and open characters which will readily fill are admitted. A limited number of pieces with no tongue which may be face nailed are admitted.”
